Vardenafil
Vardenafil is a drug used to treat erectile dysfunction in men, also known by trade names such as Levitra or Staxyn. It belongs to a group of drugs called phosphodiesterase type 5 (PDE5) inhibitors.
Here are the characteristics of vardenafil
Mechanism of action
- Vardenafil works by increasing blood flow to the penis during sexual stimulation. It blocks the enzyme phosphodiesterase type 5, which can otherwise cause constriction of blood vessels in the penis, preventing adequate blood flow and thus preventing erection.
Rapid onset of action
- Vardenafil is usually taken 30 minutes to 1 hour before planned sexual activity. It is known for its rapid onset of action, often during this time its effects can already be felt.
Duration of action
- Its effects usually last up to 4 to 5 hours. This means that after taking vardenafil, men are able to achieve and maintain an erection within this time span.
Dosage
- The maximum recommended daily dose is 20 mg.
Side effects
- Common side effects of vardenafil include headache, digestive problems (e.g. nausea, diarrhea), facial flushing, increased blood pressure, and rarely hearing loss or vision changes.
Contraindications
- Vardenafil is contraindicated in patients taking nitrates due to a possible severe drop in blood pressure. It should also not be used in men with serious heart problems, a recent heart attack or stroke.
