Sibutramine
Sibutramine tablets are used along with a low-calorie diet to help people with obesity lose weight and keep it off. Most people who lose weight on Sibutramine tablets plus diet and exercise lose it in the first six months of treatment.
Sibutramine has been presented by Abbott Laboratories under two different brand names: Meridia? in the USA, and Reductil? in Europe. When a pharmaceutical company first markets a drug, it is usually under a patent that allows only the pharmaceutical company that developed the drug to sell it. A generic drug is a drug which is produced and distributed without patent protection. Like all generics, a generic Sibutramine works on the same way as the brand name equivalents, but it is much cheaper.
A generic must contain the same active ingredients as the original formulation. Generics are assumed to be identical in dose, strength, route of administration, safety, efficacy, and intended use. In most cases, generic products are not available until the patent protections afforded to the original developer have expired. When generic products become available, the market competition often leads to substantially lower prices for both the original brand name product and the generic forms.
